Que se passe-t-il dans lil du cyclone ? Difficile à dire. Toujours est-il que léchec de « Island » na rien fait pour améliorer les relations tendues entre OLDFIELD et Branson... et par extension lempire Virgin. La pression est donc mise sur le compositeur qui se doit dabandonner ses plages instrumentales dépassées, à la rentabilité défaillante. La mode à passé, cest la marée basse. Catalogué ringard et vaguement toléré par un contrat signé quinze ans plus tôt, le guitariste enregistre donc « Earth Moving » à la maison (sur son Atari dépoque !). Composé uniquement de chansons (une première), lalbum invite pas moins de sept interprètes dont Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann's Earth Band), Daniel Lazerus et Anita Hegerland (Mme Oldfield dans le privé). Forcer sa nature donne rarement de bons résultats et il faut admettre que la magie des « Crises » ou « Discovery » semble alors bien loin. On surnage dans le synthétique, une sorte de préfabriqué dont séchappe le puissant « See the Light » ou « Earth Moving » chanté par une Nikki "B" Bentley ("B Force") habitée. Ajoutés à une dernière dose de Maggie Reilly sur le sympatoche « Blue Bight », et nous voici avec les seuls morceaux de choix auquel lauditeur peut raisonnablement prétendre. A la fin des années 80, lavenir sannonçait compliqué pour OLDFIELD. Avec lalbum suivant, il transformera pourtant le charbon en diamant.
